About Katie Combest

Hi! Nice to meet you. I am a native Texan, but I love to hike in Colorado, or anywhere there is beautiful nature, and mountains are abundant. I currently teach primarily remotely, as well as have a limited in-person studio. I have taught music for over 20 years in Flower Mound and Plano. I grew up singing in choir, playing the piano, and then began clarinet studies in the 7th grade. I immediately loved it. I earned the Principal Clarinet seat with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra after only having played clarinet for barely three years.

I attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, for my clarinet studies. There, I studied clarinet with Kenneth Grant and Jon Manasse. The instructors who made the biggest positive impact on me while at Eastman were Richard Kilmer and Donald Hunsberger.

I also had the privilege of studying with David Weber, Denise Gainey, Nancy Gamso, John Scott, and Paul Garner. Denise Gainey and Paul Garner have been my most influential instructors. I have performed in master classes given by Loren Kitt, Fred Ormand, Edward Palanker, and Larry Combs. I have performed with the Eastern Winds, Texas Winds Quintet, Southern Winds Trio, the Allen Symphony, the Las Colinas Symphony, the East Texas Symphony, Musica Nova, the New Orchestra of Spain, the Austin Ballet, the Austin Symphony, and the Bear Valley Symphony Orchestra. I have also substituted with major orchestras, musicals, operas, and freelance organizations.

Outside of music, I have a Business and Spanish degree from the University of North Texas, as well as a Project Management Certificate. Volunteering is important to me, and I have volunteered for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Dallas, the Education and Animal Rescue Society of Dallas, and A Little Help in Denver, Colorado. I enjoy writing, reading, Latin dance, traveling, hiking, attending cultural events, and spending time with my loved ones.
